Handwritten letter

Page one of a three page handwritten letter to Maurice Frank, from his friend Alf at 56 Arran Drive, Mosspark, Glasgow, dated 18th July 1940.

The page is written in blue ink on white paper and describes how the writer tried to leave Paris ahead of the invading Germans. He just managed to get away despite the railways having been closed down by the Government.

The page is one of three pages written to Maurice Frank from his friend Alf who was stationed in Paris prior and during the German invasion in July 1940. In the letter Alf describes his journey from Paris to the South of France mainly on foot, and the number of refugees he saw on the way. He also describes being attacked from the air by German planes. After twelve days he arrived at the Spanish frontier and joined a military convoy and was shipped back to England. The letter describes events in France a month after the evacuations at Dunkirk and in the same month (July) as the Battle of Britain offensive began.
