Armadale Co-operative Society Limited

Armadale Co-operative Society Limited

This black and white photograph shows the staff of Armadale Co-operative Society Limited standing outside the main branch shop. Judging by the decorations in the shop windows, it was taken at Christmas time.

There are eighteen staff in the photograph, eight female and ten male members. Possibly the ladies not wearing white aprons were employed behind the cash desk. The men were all wearing shirts and ties.

The first Armadale Co-operative Society Limited was registered in 1863, but failed in 1868 because of the large sums of credit granted. A new Co-operative Society registered in 1874 and flourished until it joined West Lothian Co-operative Society in 1972. This became part of Scottish Midland Co-operative Society in 1982.
