Label from roofing slate specimen, Westmorland

Label from specimen of roofing slate from Westmorland, England for the Elterwater Green Slate Co. Ltd., Ambleside, probably dating from around 1905. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5783.

The label documents the different types of slates produced by the company; 'L' best quality large slates, 'C' second quality, 'P' best quality peggies, 'Ps' second quality peggies, 'T' third quality peggies. The label, although damaged also gives sizes, prices and roof coverage for each type.

The term 'peggies' is used to describe smaller slates of random sizes, as opposed to large full size slates ('sizeables') or intermediate sizes ('undersized'). The dimensions of these categories varies from one slate area to another.
