View of the Jacobite Flag
This photograph shows the Jacobite flag, which carries a white cockade on a red background. According to tradition it represents the white rose that Bonnie Prince Charlie picked on the march from Glenfinnan, where he raised his standard on 19 August 1745.
The flag marks the area of the battlefield where the Jacobite troops were positioned; there is a yellow flag with a black cockade representing the Government troops and their position.
The Jacobites' fighting tactic was a devastating, uncontrolled charge at the enemy lines using broadsword and dirk to break through the ranks of soldiers. However at Culloden the wide-open space was ideal for the Duke of Cumberland's artillery, which, combined with Cumberland's clever tactics, crushed the Jacobite army.
