The car ferry has a substantial mast and a tall thin funnel. It is boarded by a side ramp. The Admiralty type anchor is not stowed away suggesting it was in frequent use. A lorry is about to drive on to the ferry.
The steam-powered ferry looks old at the time the photograph was taken (it was built at Alloa in 1905). It had no turntable, requiring drivers to manoeuvre carefully during loading and unloading. It ran from South Alloa to North Alloa.
The lowest road bridge over the River Forth at this time was at Stirling. There was another car ferry between South and North Queensferry. The South Alloa ferry was replaced by the road bridge at Kincardine in 1936. James Bremner owned and ran the ferry as did his father before him(also James Bremner). The Bremners leased the Salmon Fishing rights from Lord Mar. The Bremner family were still there until approx 1990. The family lived in "Ferry Pier House" which was next to to the pier. This is no longer there, as United Glass now occupies the site.
