S.S. Highlander

S.S. Highlander

View of a merchant ship with bridge and engines amidships and cargo holds fore and aft. She has two masts and derricks for loading cargo, and a single funnel. Her decks are crowded. There is a pleasure cruiser nearby.

The caption sub-title states 'This luxurious Passenger Steamer sails Aberdeen to Newcastle & Hull every Saturday returning from Hull every Wednesday and from Newcastle every Thursday'.

Even eighty years after the introduction of rail travel between the cities concerned, there was still a demand for passenger travel by sea as well as for transport of cargo. SS Highlander was attacked by enemy planes off Stonehaven in August 1940.
