Trawler 'Good Design III' KY 151 at Anstruther
Trawlers fish with a trawl net, which is a large bag-like net that is dragged through the sea to scoop up fish. Fish that enter the open mouth of the net are trapped in the 'cod-end'. There are side trawlers, which set the trawl over the side of the boat, or stern trawlers, which carry out the fishing from the stern.
This photograph shows the trawler 'Good Design III' tied up at Anstruther. 'Good 'Design III' was built at St Monans in 1980. She was 19.9 metres overall length and weighed 44 tons. Powered with a Kelvin 415 hp engine, she was based at Aberdeen. The Fisheries Museum can be seen at the background of this photograph.
The Scottish Fisheries Museum is a national museum that preserves the heritage of the Scottish fishing industry. The museum is home to the Memorial to Scottish Fishermen Lost at Sea and has a fully restored herring drifter 'Reaper' that is berthed in the harbour outside. There is also a Zulu fishing boat and artefacts showing how the herring lasses worked.
