Pamphlet for 'Fifer Fishing Gear' by Jas. N Miller & Sons, part 1

In the 19th century fishing gear was relatively simple. Fishing boats were powered by the wind and men fished with lines or nets. After the introduction of steam and motor power, fishing gear became more complex. Fishermen could buy mechanical aids to fishing, which were made by various companies.

This is the cover page of an advertising pamphlet for James N. Miller & Sons. Headed 'Fifer Fishing Gear', it shows a picture of a fishing boat with a Fife registration. It also has a concise list of the gear that Miller's made, including net winches, trawl winches and rope coilers.

James N. Miller & Sons were founded as boat builders in St Monans in 1747 and worked until the end of the 20C. The firm built fishing boats, luxury yachts and working launches. Although St Monans is only a small village, Millers were well known and had clients in many parts of the world.
